After the successful delivery of Radar towers for the Bureau of Meteorology at Taroom and Richmond, idec will build a new S-Band Doppler Radar at Marburg. This project forms part of the next phase of the Federal Government’s $28 million weather monitoring allocation for North West Queensland.
The project includes the construction of a brand new fully-secure compound with associated access road; installation and commissioning of a 34m tower and construction of a 70sqm precast equipment building.
Replacing the existing radar (pictured) which is now at the end of it’s operational life, the new tower will provide:
- Improved rainfall rate measurement for use in flood warning operations;
- More accurate calculation of accumulated rainfall and stored soil moisture;
- Better short-term forecasting of rainfall and severe weather; and,
- Enhanced tracking of the location and strength of wind changes – benefiting aviation as well as firefighting and emergency responses.
